제3회 세계시니어시티즌데이가 8월 22일(금) 오후 3시부터 서울 강남 양재동 소재 윤봉길의사 기념관에서 개최됩니다. 주인공 506070+여러분을 초대합니다!

세계시니어시티즌데이(World Senior Citizen's Day)는 37년전1988년 미국 로날드 레이건 대통령에 의해 선포되었습니다. 세계시니어시티즌데이는 UN의 국제노년의날 보다 3년 앞서 제정되었습니다. 미국 및 세계 각국 노년층의 노고와 그 공로를 치하하고 격려하기 위해 각국의 관련 단체들 주최로 기념행사를 갖습니다.

한국은 10월 2일을 노인의 날로 지정해 기념하고 있습니다. 그러나 초기 시작과 달리 노인의 날이 변질되고, 대한노인회의 노인회 날로 전락해 경로당 노인들이 모여 국고를 낭비하는 자체 행사로 쇠퇴해왔습니다. 작년 2024년 노인의 날도 단일 행사로 보건복지부가 국민세금 1억원의 예산을 책정한 것으로 알려져 있습니다.

세계시니어시티즌데이는 한국에서 고용노동부 사단법인 에이지연합이 2023년 8월 21일 시니어시티즌 데이 선포기념식을 개최하면서 시작됐습니다. 선포식에서는 506070+ 시니어시티즌의 역할과 책무에 관한 주제 발표가 있었습니다.

제2회 세계시니어시티즌데이는 2024년 8월 30일 서울시청 바스락 홀에서 개최되었습니다. “우리에게 정해진 미래는 없다, 나이보다 능력”이라는 THEME으로 개최된 2024년 하이라이트는 시니어 HERO 소개, 노인복지법 개정에 대한 주제 발표가 있었습니다.

제3회 세계시니어시티즌데이 준비위원회는 2025년 대회주제를 “Aging with Dignity, Resilience and Sustainable Society”로 정했습니다. ‘Ageing with Dignity’는 품위있게 나이들기, 또는 품위를 지키며 나이들기, ‘Resilience and Sustainable Society’는 위기를 견디는 힘과 지속가능한 사회, 또는 회복력 있는 지속가능한 사회를 말하며 세계 각국의 시니어들과 함께합니다.

시니어 Hero 선정발표, 계속고용과 배우며 벌며 사는 배벌사 토론, Heydays 락그룹 축하 공연이 있습니다.

시니어는 시니어라는 용어 자체로 선배노인세대와 구별됩니다. 한국사회에서 인식하는 노인세대는 은연중 경로당이나 출입하는 세대를 가리킵니다. 506070+시니어세대와 80~90대 경로당 노인세대를 확연히 구분케 됩니다. 이는 나이 차이 뿐만 아니라 가치관, 삶의 태도, 경제활동, 교육 열등에서도 큰 차이가 있습니다.

또한 자기 인식도 다릅니다. 노인세대는 자신을 보호의 대상으로 여기고 의존하려하지만 시니어세대는 여전히 사회의 주체로 일하고 배우며 사회에 기여하고자 합니다.

시니어세대는 새로운 경제주체이자, 노동력을 제공하며, 소득이 있는 납세자, 소비자로 활기찬 시민사회의 동력입니다. 이제 우리 사회도 이 두 세대를 구분하고 각각에 맞는 정책과 접근이 필요합니다.

제3회 세계시니어시티즌데이는 탄핵사태와 6·3대선 등 이 혼란기에서 깨어있는 시니어들의 지속적이고, 지속가능한 사회를 선도해 나가자는 의미를 담고 있습니다.

Invitation to the 3rd World Senior Citizen's Day – A Celebration for the 50s, 60s, and 70s+ Generation!

The 3rd World Senior Citizen's Day will be held on Friday, August 22, at the Yun Bong-Korean independence activist- Hall in Yangjae-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. This event is hosted by the World Senior Citizen’s Day Preparatory Committee, comprised of organizations related to elderly affairs, and organized by the Age Union (Chairman: Joo Myung-yong). The KARP is supporting this event.

The Age Union has set this year’s theme as “Aging with Dignity, Resilience, and a Sustainable Society,” and has launched a campaign focused on the "506070+" generation. This theme aims to highlight the importance of ensuring that older adults continue to live with dignity, resilience, and a sustainable sense of purpose in our rapidly aging society.

The program for the day will include a celebratory performance by senior citizens, a Senior HERO awards ceremony, a presentation titled “Baebulsa” (Learning and Earning through Life), and a forum on continued. There will be a celebratory performance by the rock band Heydays.

World Senior Citizen’s Day was established and proclaimed in 1988 by U.S. President Ronald Reagan to recognize and honor the contributions of the elderly population in the United States and around the world. The UN later designated October 1 as the International Day of Older Persons in 1991. In Korea, October 2 was designated as "Senior Citizens' Day" in 1997 following revisions to the Elderly Welfare Act, aiming to promote societal respect for the elderly.

However, over time, the Korean observance shifted from its original intent to become an event led by the Korea Senior Citizens Association focused mainly on local senior centers. It has since been criticized for being reduced to a budget-consuming gathering with meals rather than a meaningful tribute to the elderly. For example, in 2024, the Ministry of Health and Welfare allocated 100 million KRW for a single event on Senior Citizens’ Day.

To realign with the spirit of honoring seniors, the Age Union (registered with the Ministry of Employment and Labor) launched the 1st World Senior Citizen’s Day Proclamation Ceremony in August 2023 as part of a campaign to build a society that respects and dignifies the elderly. The event featured keynote speeches on the roles and responsibilities of senior citizens.

The 2nd World Senior Citizen's Day was held on August 30, 2024, at the Basrak Hall of Seoul City Hall under the theme: “There Is No Predetermined Future for Us – Ability Over Age.” Highlights included the presentation of Senior HERO awards and keynote addresses on amendments to the Elderly Welfare Act.
